AMA 11th edition citations, formatted from the source record

Paste a DOI, an ISBN, a link or a title and the tool finds the publisher's own record for it and formats it in AMA 11th edition — the numbered system used in JAMA and its network, and many other American medical and health-science journals. The references entry and the in-text citation come together, and the rules are those of the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition (Oxford University Press, 2020), published by the JAMA Network editors, published for the American Medical Association. The 11th edition was published in 2020 and replaced the 10th (2007).

The AMA Manual of Style website publishes updates between editions, and JAMA Network journals apply them.

How to cite in AMA here

Three steps, about twenty seconds a source.

    1

    Paste what you have

A DOI, an ISBN, a PubMed or arXiv ID, a web address, or a title. AMA is already selected on this page. The tool works out what you pasted and asks the right catalogue — Crossref, OpenLibrary, PubMed, DataCite or Semantic Scholar — for the record.

    2

    Read the card

Each source gets a card showing what the catalogue held and what the tool changed to fit AMA: a title converted to sentence case, a DOI reduced to its bare form, a page range tidied. Every change can be undone with one click if the record was right as it was.

    3

    Take the finished list

Copy the list with its formatting into Word or Google Docs, or download a .docx with the numbering and spacing already set. BibTeX, RIS and CSL-JSON exports carry the same data into Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote or LaTeX.

    How AMA formats a citation

The rules the tool applies, from the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition (Oxford University Press, 2020).

    • In the textA superscript number in the order sources are first cited, placed after commas and periods but before colons and semicolons. A page cited from a source goes in parentheses after the number, also superscript: ¹⁽ᵖ¹⁸⁸⁰⁾. A source keeps its number when cited again.
    • The referencesA list headed References in citation order, each entry beginning with its number and a period. No hanging indent.
    • Author namesSurname followed by initials with no periods: Golder SA, Macy MW. Up to six authors are listed; for seven or more, the first three are followed by et al.
    • Titles and capitalsArticle titles in sentence case without quotation marks; the tool converts a title-case record. Journal titles are italic and abbreviated as in the NLM catalogue. Book titles are italic and in title case.
    • DatesThe year immediately after the journal title, followed by a semicolon: Science. 2011;333(6051):1878-1881. A web page gives Accessed Month Day, Year before its URL.
    • Links, identifiers and placesVolume, issue and pages run together with a full page range and a hyphen. A DOI follows as doi:10.… The 11th edition dropped the publisher's city, so a book is University of Chicago Press; 2012.

AMA 11th edition examples, printed by the tool

Six real sources — two journal articles, a book, a chapter, a web page and a conference paper — formatted by the same engine that runs the generator above. Nothing here was typed by hand, so what you see is what you get.

    • Journal article, two authors

      1. Golder SA, Macy MW. Diurnal and seasonal mood vary with work, sleep, and daylength across diverse cultures. Science. 2011;333(6051):1878-1881. doi:10.1126/science.1202775

In text, citing page 1880: 1(p1880)

    • Journal article, three authors

      2. Kahneman D, Knetsch JL, Thaler RH. Anomalies: The endowment effect, loss aversion, and status quo bias. Journal of Economic Perspectives. 1991;5(1):193-206. doi:10.1257/jep.5.1.193

      In text: 2

    • Book, later edition

      3. Kuhn TS. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. 4th ed. University of Chicago Press; 2012.

In text, citing page 12: 3(p12)

    • Chapter in an edited book

      4. Grice HP. Logic and conversation. In: Cole P, Morgan JL, eds. Syntax and Semantics, Volume 3: Speech Acts. Academic Press; 1975:41-58.

In text, citing page 45: 4(p45)

    • Web page, organisation as author, no date

      5. AI Writing Assistant. Free AI writing tools: What each does and when to use it. AI Writing Assistant. Accessed September 18, 2026. https://www.aiwritingassistant.net/tools.html

      In text: 5

    • Conference paper, eight authors

      6. Vaswani A, Shazeer N, Parmar N, et al. Attention is all you need. In: Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems 30. Curran Associates; 2017:5998-6008.

      In text: 6

The publishers' records hold 6 of these titles in title case; the tool converted them to sentence case, as AMA requires, and reported each change on its card, where one click keeps the original instead.

    Common mistakes in AMA citations

Five errors markers see most often, and what the tool does about each.

The number in brackets or parentheses

AMA uses a superscript number in the text. Brackets are Vancouver's and IEEE's.

    The number before the punctuation

The superscript goes after a comma or a period, and before a colon or semicolon.

    Shortened page ranges

AMA writes 1878-1881 in full, with a hyphen; Vancouver shortens it. Copying between the two is the usual slip.

    The publisher's city

The 11th edition removed it. A 10th-edition entry reads Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press; 2012.

    A full journal name

AMA abbreviates journal titles as the NLM does and sets them in italics: JAMA, N Engl J Med.

AMA beside the styles it is confused with

If your handbook names one of these instead, its page opens the generator with that style selected.

    AMA and Vancouver

Vancouver is the international medical standard the AMA style grew alongside: bracketed or superscript numbers, unitalicised journal names, shortened page ranges, [Internet] and [cited …]. Open the Vancouver page.

    AMA and APA

APA is what nursing and allied-health courses more often ask for: author–date in the text and an alphabetical list. Open the APA page.

    AMA citation generator FAQs

Is the AMA citation generator free?

Yes. Every style, every source type and every export is free, with no account and no daily allowance, because the formatting runs in your browser rather than on our servers. Your list is saved in this browser and never sent to us.

Which edition of AMA does it use?

The 11th edition (2020). Its visible changes from the 10th are the dropped publisher's city and the DOI as doi:10.… rather than a link.

What does an in-text citation look like in AMA?

A superscript number in the order sources are first cited, placed after commas and periods but before colons and semicolons. The tool prints the in-text form under each reference; turn on the in-text switch above the list if it is hidden.

How do I cite a website in AMA?

Paste the address and the tool reads the page's title, author, site name and date where the page declares them, then formats it. The AMA form of a web page with an organisation as author and no date is: 5. AI Writing Assistant. Free AI writing tools: What each does and when to use it. AI Writing Assistant. Accessed September 18, 2026. https://www.aiwritingassistant.net/tools.html Check the author and date on the card — pages often leave them out, and the style has a rule for each case.

Can I switch from AMA to another style later?

Yes. Your sources are stored as data, not as formatted text, so choosing another style in the picker re-formats the whole list at once — APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, or any of the 10,000 Citation Style Language styles the picker searches.

Where do the AMA rules come from?

From the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition (Oxford University Press, 2020), published by the JAMA Network editors, published for the American Medical Association, as encoded in the open Citation Style Language style the tool uses. The AMA Manual of Style website publishes updates between editions, and JAMA Network journals apply them. Where your department's own guide differs on a detail, the department's guide is the one your marker reads.

    After the reference list

Check the essay's grammar, tighten the wording, or summarise a source before you cite it. One plan covers every tool.
