English to Marathi translator

English to Marathi translation that picks तू or तुम्ही before it starts

Paste your English and set the register before you translate. Formal addresses the reader as तुम्ही, or आपण in the politest notices, and suits a housing society circular, a letter to an office or a message to your in-laws. Informal uses तू, the way you write to a sister, a close friend or a younger cousin. In Marathi that choice decides the ending of every request in the text: ठेवा or ठेव, सांगा or सांग.

Below are two English to Marathi translations made on this page, a society notice about a water cut and a Ganpati message to an older sister, printed exactly as they came back. After them come the parts of Marathi that English gives no warning about: Hindi words that look right in Devanagari but are not Marathi, verbs that show whether a man or a woman is writing, and the spelling and digit choices that make a Marathi text look finished.

Should an English to Marathi translation use तू or तुम्ही?

Use तुम्ही for elders, teachers, customers, neighbours in a notice and anyone you do not know well; requests then end in -आ, as in या (come) and सांगा (tell). Use तू with siblings, close friends and younger relatives, with ये and सांग. आपण is politer still and common in printed notices. Choose Formal or Informal before translating, because every verb ending follows the pronoun.

A housing society notice about a water cut

English46 words

Notice to all residents: the water supply will be stopped on Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm because the overhead tank is being cleaned. Please store enough water on Wednesday night. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation. — Society Committee

Marathi · Formal38 words

Translated by this tool on 30 September 2026 and printed unedited.

  • This is close to how a Maharashtra housing society notice is really worded. The heading सर्व रहिवाशांसाठी सूचना, the passive स्वच्छता करण्यात येणार असल्यामुळे (because cleaning is to be carried out) and पाणीपुरवठा बंद राहील are the set phrases such notices use.
  • The times came back as सकाळी १० ते दुपारी ४ वाजेपर्यंत: am and pm became सकाळी (morning) and दुपारी (afternoon), and the digits became Devanagari numerals, which Marathi print uses widely. If the rest of your notice board says 10 and 4, change them so the building sees one style.
  • झालेल्या गैरसोयीबद्दल means 'for the inconvenience that has been caused'. The water cut has not happened yet, so होणाऱ्या गैरसोयीबद्दल (for the inconvenience that will be caused) fits a notice sent in advance. Plenty of societies use the first phrase out of habit, so treat this as polish rather than an error.
  • Politeness comes from कृपया ... साठवून ठेवा, with the तुम्ही ending -आ, and from आपल्या सहकार्याबद्दल, where आपल्या is the formal 'your'. The overhead tank stayed as the loan ओव्हरहेड टाकी and the committee became सोसायटी समिती, which is how residents actually say both.

A message to a sister about Ganpati

English44 words

Tai, I got leave from office, so I'll reach Pune on Friday night for Ganpati. Keep some modaks aside for me, don't let Aai give them all away! I'll bring the decoration lights you asked for. Tell Baba I'm coming by the late train.

Marathi · Informal37 words

ताई, मला ऑफिसमधून सुट्टी मिळाली आहे, त्यामुळे गणपतीसाठी मी शुक्रवारी रात्री पुण्याला पोहोचेन. माझ्यासाठी काही मोदक बाजूला ठेव, आईला ते सगळे वाटून देऊ नकोस! तू सांगितलेले सजावटीचे दिवे मी घेऊन येईन. बाबांना सांग, मी उशिराच्या ट्रेनने येतोय.

Translated by this tool on 30 September 2026 and printed unedited.

  • The tone is right for an older sister. ठेव, सांग and देऊ नकोस are the तू forms, and Tai, Aai and Baba came through as ताई, आई and बाबा rather than sister, mother and father. बाबांना takes the respectful plural ending, which is how a grown child refers to a father.
  • मी उशिराच्या ट्रेनने येतोय is the masculine 'I am coming'. The English never said who is writing; a woman would write येतेय. The other two verbs about the writer, पोहोचेन and येईन, are future forms that are the same for men and women, so this is the only word to check.
  • One slip: 'don't let Aai give them all away' became आईला ते सगळे वाटून देऊ नकोस, which reads as 'don't give them all away to Aai'. The 'let' needs वाटू देऊ नकोस, so the sentence should be आईला ते सगळे वाटू देऊ नकोस. A sister will guess what you meant, but the Marathi says something else.
  • Pune became पुण्याला, with the -ला ending Marathi uses for going to a place, and modak, Ganpati and office stayed as मोदक, गणपती and ऑफिस, words a Marathi family uses every day.

तू, तुम्ही or आपण in English to Marathi translation

Marathi has two everyday ways to say 'you' and a third for print. तू is for people close to you or younger than you. तुम्ही is respectful when used for one person and is also the ordinary plural, so a notice to all residents uses it naturally. आपण is the most formal, found in letters, speeches and announcements, and it has a trap: in ordinary speech आपण also means 'we', including the listener, as in आपण जाऊया (let's go). Put आपण into a casual message and it can read as 'we' when you meant 'you'.

The pronoun is only half of it. Every command and request changes its ending too, as the two samples on this page show.

EnglishFormal (तुम्ही)Informal (तू)
Come tomorrow.उद्या या.उद्या ये.
Keep some modaks aside.काही मोदक बाजूला ठेवा.काही मोदक बाजूला ठेव.
Tell Baba.बाबांना सांगा.बाबांना सांग.
Don't give them away.ते वाटून देऊ नका.ते वाटून देऊ नकोस.
Where are you going?तुम्ही कुठे जात आहात?तू कुठे जात आहेस?

नका and नकोस are the two negative commands: नका goes with तुम्ही, नकोस with तू. Mixing them, such as तुम्ही in one line and नकोस in the next, is the kind of slip a Marathi reader stops at.

Marathi in Devanagari is not Hindi

Marathi and Hindi share the Devanagari script and a good deal of Sanskrit-derived vocabulary in formal writing, but the everyday words that hold a sentence together are different. When a machine is unsure it can fall back on the Hindi word, written in the same letters, and a Marathi reader notices at once. Neither sample on this page has the problem: the notice uses आणि, not और, and ends its sentences with राहील and आहोत, not the Hindi रहेगा and हैं.

Use the table as a quick check on longer documents, where one stray word is easy to miss.

EnglishHindi (replace)Marathi
isहैआहे
andऔरआणि
notनहींनाही
whatक्याकाय
veryबहुतखूप
waterपानीपाणी
tomorrowकलउद्या
morningसुबहसकाळ

Watch the letters as well as the words. Marathi has ळ, which Hindi does not use, in everyday words like सकाळ (morning), वेळ (time) and बाळ (baby), and many words have ण where the Hindi one has न, as in पाणी against पानी. It also writes the half र of words like होणाऱ्या and दुसऱ्या with its own sign. A Marathi word in Hindi spelling looks as wrong as a Hindi word.

The verb says whether a man or a woman wrote it

English 'I am coming' tells the reader nothing about the writer. Marathi does: मी येतोय is a man, मी येतेय is a woman. The same split runs through the past, मी आलो against मी आले, and the present, मी येतो against मी येते. The translator has to choose, and in the Ganpati message, with no clue in the English, it chose the masculine.

The simple future is the exception. मी येईन and मी पोहोचेन are the same whoever says them, which is why that message only had one word to check. If you want a message that works for any sender, putting your own actions in the future tense is a simple way round the problem.

EnglishA man writesA woman writes
I came.मी आलो.मी आले.
I am coming.मी येतोय.मी येतेय.
I go every day.मी रोज जातो.मी रोज जाते.
I will come.मी येईन.मी येईन.

Transitive verbs in the past follow a different rule. In मी पुस्तक वाचले (I read the book) the verb agrees with पुस्तक, not with the person reading, so it is the same for a man or a woman. Check the verbs that describe you and your reader, not every verb in the text.

Society notices, digits and punctuation

Housing society circulars are one of the commonest reasons people translate English to Marathi, and they have their own style: a heading ending in सूचना, the passive करण्यात येणार आहे for work that will be done, and a signature from the committee or the secretary. The water-cut sample follows that pattern closely. For anything going to the whole building, keep the register on Formal so every instruction ends in -आ.

Marathi print uses both Devanagari digits (१, २, ३) and Western ones, and the translator chose Devanagari in the notice. Either is correct; what looks careless is a notice that gives the time as १० and a flat number as 402 on the same line. Unlike Hindi, which often ends sentences with the danda (।), modern Marathi uses the ordinary full stop, as both samples do. Amounts stay in rupees, and the translator does not convert a price from another currency.

Aai, Baba, Tai and other words to leave alone

Marathi family words carry age and side of the family in a way English does not. ताई is an older sister, दादा an older brother, आई and बाबा mother and father, काका a father's brother and काकू his wife, मावशी a mother's sister. When your English already uses them, as the Ganpati message did, the translator keeps them. When your English says 'my aunt', it has to guess which aunt, and काकू for a mother's sister is a mistake the family will notice.

Names and festival words work the same way. Ganpati, modak and a person's name should come through unchanged or in their usual Marathi spelling; select a name and press Keep if you want it exactly as typed in Latin letters. The endings Marathi adds to names and places, such as बाबांना, आईला and पुण्याला in the sample, are correct grammar, not typing errors.

Mistakes to check before you send

येतोय from a woman

If you are a woman writing about yourself, look at the verbs that describe you for -लो, -तो and -तोय and change them to -ले, -ते and -तेय. The English never told the translator who you are.

तू in a notice or to an elder

A circular, or a message to your in-laws, in the तू form reads as rude. Set Formal first; turning तू into तुम्ही afterwards means rewriting every verb ending as well.

A Hindi word in the middle of Marathi

है, और, बहुत or नहीं in a Marathi sentence is the giveaway. Replace them with आहे, आणि, खूप and नाही, or click the sentence to see other wordings.

वाटून where you meant 'let'

The Ganpati sample shows it: 'don't let her give them away' needs वाटू देऊ नकोस, not वाटून देऊ नकोस. Read every 'let' sentence in your English against the Marathi.

Apologising in the wrong tense

झालेल्या गैरसोयीबद्दल apologises for trouble already caused. For a notice about a cut that is still to come, होणाऱ्या गैरसोयीबद्दल says what you mean.

Two digit styles on one notice

Devanagari १० in one line and Western 10 in the next looks careless on a printed notice. Pick one style for the whole page.

Sale deeds, court papers, and anything a government office in Maharashtra will stamp should be translated by a qualified Marathi translator; this tool is right for society notices, family messages and drafts.

English to Marathi translation questions

How do I write 'you' politely in Marathi?

Use तुम्ही and the verb forms that go with it: या, बसा, सांगा. In a formal letter or printed notice, आपण and आपल्या are politer still, as in आपल्या सहकार्याबद्दल धन्यवाद from the sample notice. तू with ये, बस and सांग is for family and friends.

Why does my Marathi translation use the masculine?

Marathi verbs change with the speaker's gender and English gives no clue, so the translator often picks the masculine. Change येतोय to येतेय, आलो to आले and जातो to जाते if a woman is writing. Future forms such as येईन need no change.

Can Hindi speakers read Marathi?

They can read the letters, since both use Devanagari, and they will recognise many formal words. Everyday Marathi grammar and vocabulary are different enough (आहे for है, आणि for और, काय for क्या) that a Hindi speaker often cannot follow all of a Marathi message.

Does Marathi use the danda (।) at the end of a sentence?

No, modern Marathi uses the ordinary full stop, as both samples on this page do. The danda is used in Hindi, Nepali and Punjabi writing. Question marks, commas and exclamation marks work as they do in English.

Will the translator write Marathi digits or English ones?

It may use either. The society notice came back with Devanagari digits, सकाळी १० ते दुपारी ४. Both are correct in Marathi; if your document already uses 10 and 4, change the translation to match rather than mixing the two.

Should I translate Aai, Baba and Tai?

No. Marathi readers write आई, बाबा, ताई and दादा, and the translator keeps them when your English does. Replacing them with formal words for mother, father and sister would make a family message sound stiff.

Can I translate Marathi back into English here?

Yes. Press the swap button to make Marathi the source, or press 'Use as source' on the result to run your Marathi back into English. If a 'please', a time or a 'don't' has changed on the way back, check that sentence in the Marathi.
