Should an English to Nepali translation use तिमी or तपाईं?

Use तपाईं for anyone older than you, anyone you do not know well, customers, officials and, in many families, parents; its requests end in -नुहोस्, as in आउनुहोस्. Use तिमी for friends and younger siblings, with आऊ. हजुर is more respectful again, for grandparents or very polite speech. Set Formal for तपाईं or Informal for तिमी before you translate.

Nepali has four in everyday use, each with its own verb endings. तँ is for small children and the very closest friends, and to anyone else it sounds rude. तिमी is familiar: friends, younger siblings, and a spouse in many homes. तपाईं is respectful and the safe default for adults. हजुर is the most respectful, used for grandparents, respected elders and in very polite service speech.

The two register settings map to तिमी (Informal) and तपाईं (Formal). The verb changes with them:

हजुर takes the same -नुहुन्छ and -नुहोस् verb forms as तपाईं, so if you want it for a grandparent, replacing the pronoun in a Formal translation is usually enough.

Nepali, not Hindi in Devanagari

Nepali and Hindi share the Devanagari script and many Sanskrit-based words, and many Nepali readers also understand Hindi. That makes Hindi slips easy for a machine to make and embarrassing for the writer, because the grammar words are completely different. Both samples on this page are free of them, with छ, र, सँग and धेरै throughout.

Watch the days of the week as well. Nepali writes them with -बार, as in आइतबार, सोमबार and मङ्गलबार; the Hindi forms end in -वार.

Spelling points Nepali readers notice

Nepali spelling differs from Hindi habits in a few visible places, and the hospital letter gets all of them right. Nepali commonly writes the nasal consonant in full before its partner letter in Sanskrit words, so मङ्गल rather than the Hindi-style मंगल. Many English to Nepali translations are family messages from people working abroad, and they raise a problem the register selector cannot solve alone: one message often speaks to parents, a spouse and younger siblings at once. Mistakes to check before you send

तिमी to parents or elders

If Informal gives you तिमी forms such as आऊ and पठाऊ, they suit a younger brother but not your father. For a message that includes elders, use Formal or change the verbs.

Hindi grammar words

है, नहीं, और or बहुत in a Nepali text are Hindi. Replace them with छ, छैन, र and धेरै.

Hindi-style weekdays

मंगलवार is the Hindi spelling. Nepali writes मङ्गलबार, आइतबार and सोमबार.

A Gregorian date read as Bikram Sambat

15 November written in Nepali is still 15 November, not a BS date. Add the Bikram Sambat date yourself if the reader will expect it.

One register for a mixed message

Parents and younger siblings in one letter need different verb forms. Translate the two parts separately, or keep the whole message respectful.

Two digit styles
