English to Hindi translation with the register set first

What changes between English and Hindi
The differences that decide whether a translation reads as written by a person.
Script and directionEnglish is written in Latin; Hindi in Devanagari. Names cross between scripts by sound, which is why freezing them matters.
Word orderEnglish is subject-verb-object; Hindi is subject-object-verb. Sentences are rebuilt, not mapped word for word, and long sentences are where a weak translator loses the thread.
How politeness is markedHindi has three levels of 'you': 'तू' (intimate or blunt), 'तुम' (familiar) and 'आप' (respectful, used with elders, strangers and in all formal writing). The verb changes with each.
Formality in EnglishEnglish has no separate polite and familiar 'you'. Register lives in vocabulary and sentence shape instead: 'Could you let me know' against 'Tell me', 'purchase' against 'buy'.
Where translation into Hindi goes wrong
Three things Hindi readers notice at once, and a machine has to be told about.
Verbs agree with gender
Verbs agree with the gender of the subject ('जाता हूँ' / 'जाती हूँ'), which an English source rarely states, so a translation for an unknown writer has to be phrased around it.
Sanskrit or everyday vocabulary
Formal written Hindi draws on Sanskrit vocabulary that everyday speech replaces with Urdu-derived or English words; a translation for a notice and one for a chat use different words.
Postpositions
Postpositions follow the noun ('मेज़ पर' — on the table), so the order of every English prepositional phrase reverses.
What has to be read correctly in the English first
Errors that start on the source side, before a single Hindi word is chosen.
'You' is ambiguous
'You' is ambiguous: one person or several, a friend or a stranger. Translators guess, and a guess in the wrong direction is the single most common way an English original lands badly.
Stacked nouns
English piles up nouns ('customer data retention policy'); most languages need those unpacked into phrases, and a literal rendering is unreadable.
Phrasal verbs and idioms
Phrasal verbs ('put up with', 'look into') and idioms are translated word by word by weaker systems.

Should I translate into Hindi as आप or तुम?

Use तुम for friends, family and people who have used it with you; use आप for customers, officials, employers and anyone you have not met.
