What Fluency mode does

You know what you want to say and the sentence is already saying it, but it reads stiffly, the articles and prepositions are slightly off, or a native reader would pause. That is the job of Fluency mode: it keeps your ideas and your order of ideas and repairs the English around them. Fluency fixes agreement, tense, articles, prepositions and word choice, and smooths the rhythm of a sentence, without changing its register or its length by much. It is the gentlest of the modes.

What Fluency mode changes

The three kinds of edit it makes, with the words from the example above.

Grammar that a second-language writer trips onSubject–verb agreement ("customers is complaining"), tense ("the results was"), articles and prepositions are corrected in the rewrite rather than flagged.

What it leaves alone

A paraphrase is judged by what it does not touch.

Your registerA casual draft stays casual and a formal one stays formal. Fluency is not Formal mode; it does not lift or lower the tone.
Your structure and order of ideasSentences stay in the order you wrote them. If you need the argument rebuilt, that is Standard at Extensive, not Fluency.
Names, numbers, dates and linksProtect names & numbers is on by default, so a figure, a date or an organisation never quietly becomes something else.

How far to move it

The synonyms slider sets the degree of change: Light, Balanced or Extensive.

Strength for FluencyLight is the usual setting for Fluency: it corrects and smooths and stops. Balanced allows a little rephrasing where a sentence is clumsy. Extensive (part of Pro) is rarely what you want here, because the point of Fluency is to keep your wording.
Protect names & numbersOn by default. Figures, dates, citations and organisations stay exactly as written. Switch it off only when a number itself is what you want reworded.
FreezeClick any word in the result and freeze it. A frozen term survives every later run of any mode.

Using it on someone else's text and skipping the citation

Fluency changes very little on purpose, so a fluent version of a source is still that source. Cite it, or paraphrase it properly in Standard mode.

Expecting a change of tone

Fluency makes a sentence read well at the register it already has. To make it professional, run Formal; to make it plain, run Simple.

Accepting a fix you do not understand

Every changed word is highlighted. If a correction surprises you, click it: the original is one tap away, and the point of the diff is that you learn what was wrong.

Running it on text that was fine

If nothing is highlighted, the sentence was already fluent. That is a result, not a failure.

Feeding it a whole essay at once

Fluency works sentence by sentence, so it copes with long text, but you review it sentence by sentence too. A paragraph or two at a time is faster to check.

Is the fluency paraphraser free?

Yes. Fluency is one of the six free paraphrase modes, and you can use it without an account within the per-request word allowance shown next to the editor. Signing in raises the allowance; Pro removes the guest limits and the ads and adds the Academic, Creative and Custom modes and the Extensive synonyms level.

What does Fluency mode do that a grammar checker does not?

A grammar checker marks the errors and offers a fix for each one; Fluency rewrites the sentence so that all of them are fixed at once and the result reads naturally. Use the grammar checker when you want to learn from each correction, and Fluency when you want the clean version now.

Will it change my meaning?

It is built not to. Fluency keeps the order of ideas, the register and the length, and Protect names & numbers holds every figure and name steady. The highlighted diff shows exactly which words moved, so a drift is something you can see rather than something you have to trust.

Is Fluency mode good for non-native English?

It is the mode built for it. A draft that says the right thing in slightly wrong English comes back saying the same thing in English a native reader will not notice. Rewriting your own draft this way is editing, and it raises no integrity question.

Will the fluency paraphraser change names, numbers or dates?

Not unless you switch Protect names & numbers off. It is on by default, so a figure, a date, a citation or an organisation stays exactly as written while the sentence is rebuilt around it. You can also click any word and freeze it so it survives every run.

Can I see what the fluency paraphraser changed?

Yes. The result comes back with every changed word highlighted against your original, and you can switch to the original at any time to compare. Click a highlighted word for alternatives, edit the result in place, or step back to an earlier version.
