Hebrew grammar checked with the reason attached

Paste Hebrew and every issue is underlined where it happens, labelled spelling, grammar, punctuation or style, with the reason attached. Hebrew is written in the Hebrew alphabet, right to left, and gender agreement, the construct state, full spelling without vowel points are what a checker has to get right in it. This one shows the rule each time, not just the change, so you can accept the fix, ignore it, or learn from it.

How to check Hebrew grammar

Three steps. The third is the one most checkers leave out.

1

Paste or upload the Hebrew

Type, paste or drop in a document. Hebrew is already selected as the language on this page. If the text turns out to be something else, the detector says so and you can change it.

2

Read the flags

Every flag is underlined in the text and listed beside it. Spelling and grammar flags are errors; punctuation and style flags are judgements, and the label tells you which is which before you decide.

3

Accept, ignore or read why

Click a flag to see the fix and the rule behind it, then accept it or ignore it. Hebrew has rules that speech does not reveal, and the reason is there so the same error is not made twice.

What the checker looks at in Hebrew

The parts of Hebrew grammar and spelling where a checker has to know the language, not just the words.

  • AgreementNouns are masculine or feminine and adjectives, verbs and numerals agree in gender and number: ילד טוב, ילדה טובה, ילדים טובים. Numerals have separate masculine and feminine forms (שלושה ילדים, שלוש ילדות), and getting them backwards is the classic native error.
  • VerbsRoots of three letters and seven binyanim (patterns) generate the verbs; the past and future conjugate for person and gender, the present agrees like an adjective (אני כותב, אני כותבת). The infinitive takes ל- (לכתוב).
  • Spelling and diacriticsEveryday Hebrew is written without vowel points (niqqud); the Academy’s rules for full spelling (ktiv male) add vav and yod to mark vowels (מילה, סיפור) so the text can be read unpointed. The checker follows the 2017 rules of the Academy of the Hebrew Language.
  • PunctuationStandard punctuation, running right to left; the question mark and comma are the Latin ones. The maqaf (־) joins words that lean on each other (בית־ספר in traditional typography, usually written with a space today). Gershayim (״) mark acronyms (צה״ל).
  • Capital lettersNo capital letters. Five letters take a final form at the end of a word (ך, ם, ן, ף, ץ), and a medial form written at the end is a spelling error.

Common mistakes in Hebrew writing

Five errors Hebrew readers notice at once, and what the checker does with each.

Numerals with the wrong gender

שלושה ספרים (masculine) but שלוש מחברות (feminine). The masculine numeral is the one with the ה ending, which is the opposite of what the noun endings suggest.

Medial letter at the end of a word

שלום, not שלומ. Kaf, mem, nun, pe and tsadi have final forms, and the medial form in final position is a spelling error.

Missing vav or yod in full spelling

מילה, סיפור, איטליה: unpointed Hebrew needs the vowel letters the Academy’s ktiv male rules specify, and a word written defectively can be read two ways.

Construct state agreement

בית ספר, בתי ספר: in a construct chain the first noun changes (בית becomes בתי in the plural) and the definite article goes on the last word (בית הספר).

Prefix written as a separate word

בבית, לעבודה, שאמרתי: the prepositions and the relative ש are attached, never spaced.

Formal and informal Hebrew

Formality is carried by vocabulary and by full sentences rather than by a pronoun; אתה/את are used with everyone. Written Hebrew keeps the future tense for commands in formal text (תשלח rather than the imperative), and avoids the slang particles of speech.

The checker flags a mixed register as style rather than as an error, so the decision stays yours. If a whole text needs to move from one register to the other, the tone changer rewrites it in one pass.

Who checks Hebrew here

1

Students in Israel, where full spelling and numeral gender are marked in the bagrut.

2

Businesses and translators whose Hebrew must follow the Academy’s spelling.

3

Learners and heritage speakers who read Hebrew and write it uncertainly.

Hebrew grammar checker FAQs

Is the Hebrew grammar checker free?

Yes. Check Hebrew without an account, within the per-check and daily word allowances shown beside the editor. Signing in raises them, and Pro removes the guest limits and the ads. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.

Which Hebrew does it check?

Standard written Hebrew, spelled as the current standard has it. Full spelling against defective spelling (the Academy rules decide where vav and yod go), the final letters, the prefixes ב, ל, מ, ש, ו attached to the following word without a space, and the gender of numerals are the errors met most. Hebrew is preselected on this page; the language menu above the editor changes it if the text turns out to be something else.

Does it correct Hebrew spelling as well as grammar?

Yes, and in Hebrew the two overlap. Full spelling against defective spelling (the Academy rules decide where vav and yod go), the final letters, the prefixes ב, ל, מ, ש, ו attached to the following word without a space, and the gender of numerals are the errors met most. Each of these is underlined where it happens, labelled spelling or grammar, with the standard form and the rule beside it.

Will it rewrite my Hebrew?

Not unless you ask it to. A check corrects what is wrong and leaves your sentences as you wrote them; every change is a separate flag you accept or ignore. The Improve and Rewrite passes, which do change wording, are separate buttons, and the paraphraser is a separate tool.

Can I check a whole Hebrew document?

Yes. Paste the text or drop in a .docx, .pdf or .txt file; the document is checked paragraph by paragraph and the corrected version can be copied or exported. Hebrew runs right to left and the editor lays it out that way. Long documents are checked within the per-check allowance and continue as you scroll.

Is it useful if I am learning Hebrew?

That is where the reason attached to each flag earns its keep. Nouns are masculine or feminine and adjectives, verbs and numerals agree in gender and number: ילד טוב, ילדה טובה, ילדים טובים. A learner sees which rule was broken, not just the corrected word, and can accept the fix or read why it was raised before deciding.

After the check

Translate the corrected Hebrew, change its tone, or shorten it. One plan covers every tool.
