What the checker looks at in Hungarian
The parts of Hungarian grammar and spelling where a checker has to know the language, not just the words.
AgreementHungarian has no gender and no agreement of adjective with noun, but around eighteen case endings and vowel harmony that decides the form of every suffix (házban, kertben). The plural marker -k and the possessive suffixes (házam, házad, háza) stack in a fixed order.
VerbsEvery verb has two conjugations: indefinite (olvasok egy könyvet) and definite (olvasom a könyvet), chosen by whether the object is definite. This is the rule learners fail most and natives never do; natives instead slip on the -ba/-ban (into/in) endings and on suk-sükölés in the subjunctive.
Spelling and diacriticsShort and long vowels are different letters (a/á, e/é, o/ó, ö/ő, u/ú, ü/ű), and length changes meaning: kor (age), kór (disease); tör (breaks), tőr (dagger). ő and ű, the double-acute letters, are the ones most often replaced by ö and ü on foreign keyboards.
PunctuationA comma precedes every subordinate clause (Tudom, hogy jön) and separates clauses joined by és when they have different subjects. Quotation marks open low („így”). Decimals take a comma.
Capital lettersDays, months, languages and nationalities are lower case (hétfő, január, magyar). Ön and Önök, the formal you, are capitalised in correspondence.
Common mistakes in Hungarian writing

-ba/-be or -ban/-ben
A boltba megyek (into the shop) but a boltban vagyok (in the shop). Speech merges them; writing keeps them apart.
Definite or indefinite conjugation
Látok egy autót, but látom az autót. The object decides the verb ending, and a mismatch is immediately visible.
ly or j
Folyó, hely, gólya with ly; fej, haj, új with j. Pronounced the same; fixed by the dictionary.
Short or long vowel
Kérek (I ask) against kerek (round); vár (castle, waits) against var (scab). The accent is not decoration.
Suk-sükölés
For verbs ending in -t the indicative and the subjunctive differ: látjuk (we see it) against lássuk (let us see it). Writing lássuk where látjuk belongs is the error Hungarian teachers name first.
Formal and informal Hungarian
Te against Ön (and the intermediate maga): Ön takes the third-person verb (Ön tud) and is the standard in business and official writing, capitalised in letters. Tegeződés is agreed, not assumed.
The checker flags a mixed register as style rather than as an error, so the decision stays yours. If a whole text needs to move from one register to the other, the tone changer rewrites it in one pass.

Will it rewrite my Hungarian?
