Swedish grammar checked with the reason attached

Paste Swedish and every issue is underlined where it happens, labelled spelling, grammar, punctuation or style, with the reason attached. Swedish is written in the Latin alphabet, and en and ett agreement, compounds, de and dem are what a checker has to get right in it. This one shows the rule each time, not just the change, so you can accept the fix, ignore it, or learn from it.

How to check Swedish grammar

Three steps. The third is the one most checkers leave out.

1

Paste or upload the Swedish

Type, paste or drop in a document. Swedish is already selected as the language on this page. If the text turns out to be something else, the detector says so and you can change it.

2

Read the flags

Every flag is underlined in the text and listed beside it. Spelling and grammar flags are errors; punctuation and style flags are judgements, and the label tells you which is which before you decide.

3

Accept, ignore or read why

Click a flag to see the fix and the rule behind it, then accept it or ignore it. Swedish has rules that speech does not reveal, and the reason is there so the same error is not made twice.

What the checker looks at in Swedish

The parts of Swedish grammar and spelling where a checker has to know the language, not just the words.

  • AgreementNouns are en-words or ett-words, and adjectives and the definite ending follow: en stor bil, ett stort hus, den stora bilen, det stora huset. Plural and definite forms take their own adjective ending (-a), and the double definiteness (den stora bilen, with both den and -en) is a Swedish habit learners miss.
  • VerbsVerbs do not change for person, which removes one class of error, but the verb still stands second in a main clause and the sentence adverb (inte, alltid) moves before the verb in a subordinate clause: jag vet att han inte kommer.
  • Spelling and diacriticså, ä and ö are separate letters at the end of the alphabet, not accented a and o. Writing aa, ae, oe is not Swedish; the acute appears only in loanwords and names (idé, kafé, Linnéa).
  • PunctuationStandard; decimals take a comma. Swedish uses ” ” (closing marks at both ends) or a dash for dialogue. There is no comma before att or som unless the clause is parenthetical.
  • Capital lettersDays, months, languages and nationalities are lower case (måndag, januari, svenska, en svensk). Titles of works capitalise only the first word.

Common mistakes in Swedish writing

Five errors Swedish readers notice at once, and what the checker does with each.

Särskrivning: compounds split apart

Kycklinglever is chicken liver; kyckling lever means the chicken is alive. Swedish writes compounds as one word, and splitting them is the error Swedes tease each other about.

de and dem

De is the subject (de kommer), dem the object (jag ser dem). Because both are pronounced dom, the spelling has to be decided by grammar, and dom itself is not accepted in formal writing.

sin, sitt, sina against hans, hennes, deras

The reflexive possessive refers back to the subject: han tog sin bok (his own book), han tog hans bok (someone else’s). English has no equivalent and learners get it backwards.

Word order after an opening adverbial

Igår kom han, not igår han kom. When something other than the subject opens the sentence, the verb still comes second.

en or ett

Ett hus, en bil, ett problem, en fråga. The choice sets the adjective and the definite ending, so one wrong article produces three visible errors.

Formal and informal Swedish

Modern Swedish uses du with almost everyone, including officials and customers, since the du-reform of the late 1960s; ni is reserved for a plural you and reads as stiff or ironic in the singular. A text that ni-addresses one person sounds translated.

The checker flags a mixed register as style rather than as an error, so the decision stays yours. If a whole text needs to move from one register to the other, the tone changer rewrites it in one pass.

Who checks Swedish here

1

Students and SFI learners in Sweden, and Swedes abroad who write Swedish less than they used to.

2

Companies answering Swedish customers who notice a särskrivning before they notice the content.

3

Anyone writing formal Swedish who wants du, sin and the word order confirmed.

Swedish grammar checker FAQs

Is the Swedish grammar checker free?

Yes. Check Swedish without an account, within the per-check and daily word allowances shown beside the editor. Signing in raises them, and Pro removes the guest limits and the ads. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.

Which Swedish does it check?

Standard written Swedish, spelled as the current standard has it. The everyday errors are the compound written as two words (a special-writing so common it has a name, särskrivning) and the de/dem pair, which most Swedes pronounce the same (dom). Swedish is preselected on this page; the language menu above the editor changes it if the text turns out to be something else.

Does it correct Swedish spelling as well as grammar?

Yes, and in Swedish the two overlap. The everyday errors are the compound written as two words (a special-writing so common it has a name, särskrivning) and the de/dem pair, which most Swedes pronounce the same (dom). Each of these is underlined where it happens, labelled spelling or grammar, with the standard form and the rule beside it.

Will it rewrite my Swedish?

Not unless you ask it to. A check corrects what is wrong and leaves your sentences as you wrote them; every change is a separate flag you accept or ignore. The Improve and Rewrite passes, which do change wording, are separate buttons, and the paraphraser is a separate tool.

Can I check a whole Swedish document?

Yes. Paste the text or drop in a .docx, .pdf or .txt file; the document is checked paragraph by paragraph and the corrected version can be copied or exported. Long documents are checked within the per-check allowance and continue as you scroll.

Is it useful if I am learning Swedish?

That is where the reason attached to each flag earns its keep. Nouns are en-words or ett-words, and adjectives and the definite ending follow: en stor bil, ett stort hus, den stora bilen, det stora huset. A learner sees which rule was broken, not just the corrected word, and can accept the fix or read why it was raised before deciding.

After the check

Translate the corrected Swedish, change its tone, or shorten it. One plan covers every tool.
