Ukrainian grammar checked with the reason attached

Paste Ukrainian and every issue is underlined where it happens, labelled spelling, grammar, punctuation or style, with the reason attached. Ukrainian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, and seven cases, the apostrophe, ґ and г, the vocative are what a checker has to get right in it. This one shows the rule each time, not just the change, so you can accept the fix, ignore it, or learn from it.

How to check Ukrainian grammar

Three steps. The third is the one most checkers leave out.

1

Paste or upload the Ukrainian

Type, paste or drop in a document. Ukrainian is already selected as the language on this page. If the text turns out to be something else, the detector says so and you can change it.

2

Read the flags

Every flag is underlined in the text and listed beside it. Spelling and grammar flags are errors; punctuation and style flags are judgements, and the label tells you which is which before you decide.

3

Accept, ignore or read why

Click a flag to see the fix and the rule behind it, then accept it or ignore it. Ukrainian has rules that speech does not reveal, and the reason is there so the same error is not made twice.

What the checker looks at in Ukrainian

The parts of Ukrainian grammar and spelling where a checker has to know the language, not just the words.

  • AgreementSeven cases including a living vocative (Іване, Маріє), three genders, and adjectives and past-tense verbs that agree with the noun: новий будинок, нова книга, у новому будинку. Numerals two to four take the nominative plural, five and above the genitive plural.
  • VerbsAspect pairs (робити/зробити) and a gendered past tense (він зробив, вона зробила), like Russian, but the future has a synthetic form (робитиму) beside the compound one (буду робити), and the infinitive ends in -ти.
  • Spelling and diacriticsUkrainian uses є, і, ї and ґ, which Russian lacks, and has no ы, э or ё. The apostrophe replaces the hard sign (м’ясо, п’ять, об’єкт) and is a spelling requirement, not a typographic choice.
  • PunctuationCommas before every що, який, щоб, бо and around participial phrases; the dash for a missing to be (Київ — столиця). Guillemets « » for quotation.
  • Capital lettersDays, months, languages and nationalities are lower case (понеділок, січень, українська). Ви and Ваш are capitalised in letters to one person.

Common mistakes in Ukrainian writing

Five errors Ukrainian readers notice at once, and what the checker does with each.

The missing apostrophe

М’ясо, п’ять, здоров’я, об’єднання. Where Russian writes a hard sign or nothing, Ukrainian writes the apostrophe before я, ю, є, ї after a labial or р.

и or і, е or є

Ukrainian и is a different vowel from Russian и; кит (whale) and кіт (cat) are different words. Russian-keyboard habits produce the wrong letter.

Russianisms in construction

Приймати участь should be брати участь; на протязі should be протягом; згідно наказу should be згідно з наказом. These are grammatical calques, and the checker names the Ukrainian form.

The vocative

Іване, Оксано, пане директоре. Addressing someone in the nominative is a marked error in written Ukrainian, unlike Russian.

проєкт and the 2019 spelling

Проєкт, Атени alongside Афіни, ефір and етер both accepted: the reform changed loanword spelling, and older forms are flagged where the new one is now the only standard.

Formal and informal Ukrainian

Ти and Ви: Ви takes the plural verb (Ви знаєте) and is the default in business and with strangers; with a name it is often Ви plus the first name and patronymic, or increasingly пан/пані plus first name.

The checker flags a mixed register as style rather than as an error, so the decision stays yours. If a whole text needs to move from one register to the other, the tone changer rewrites it in one pass.

Who checks Ukrainian here

1

Students and civil servants in Ukraine, where the 2019 orthography is now the standard in exams and documents.

2

Ukrainians abroad writing on Russian or English keyboards.

3

Businesses writing to Ukrainian customers who read Russianisms as carelessness.

Ukrainian grammar checker FAQs

Is the Ukrainian grammar checker free?

Yes. Check Ukrainian without an account, within the per-check and daily word allowances shown beside the editor. Signing in raises them, and Pro removes the guest limits and the ads. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.

Which Ukrainian does it check?

Standard written Ukrainian, spelled as the current standard has it. The 2019 spelling reform (новий правопис) restored ґ in more words, allowed feminine forms of professions (директорка), and adjusted loanword spelling (проєкт, not проект). Ukrainian is preselected on this page; the language menu above the editor changes it if the text turns out to be something else.

Does it correct Ukrainian spelling as well as grammar?

Yes, and in Ukrainian the two overlap. The 2019 spelling reform (новий правопис) restored ґ in more words, allowed feminine forms of professions (директорка), and adjusted loanword spelling (проєкт, not проект). Russianisms in vocabulary and construction (на протязі for протягом, приймати участь for брати участь) are the errors editors mark most. Each of these is underlined where it happens, labelled spelling or grammar, with the standard form and the rule beside it.

Will it rewrite my Ukrainian?

Not unless you ask it to. A check corrects what is wrong and leaves your sentences as you wrote them; every change is a separate flag you accept or ignore. The Improve and Rewrite passes, which do change wording, are separate buttons, and the paraphraser is a separate tool.

Can I check a whole Ukrainian document?

Yes. Paste the text or drop in a .docx, .pdf or .txt file; the document is checked paragraph by paragraph and the corrected version can be copied or exported. Long documents are checked within the per-check allowance and continue as you scroll.

Is it useful if I am learning Ukrainian?

That is where the reason attached to each flag earns its keep. Seven cases including a living vocative (Іване, Маріє), three genders, and adjectives and past-tense verbs that agree with the noun: новий будинок, нова книга, у новому будинку. A learner sees which rule was broken, not just the corrected word, and can accept the fix or read why it was raised before deciding.

After the check

Translate the corrected Ukrainian, change its tone, or shorten it. One plan covers every tool.
